-- AM patch (through Rider) by H.B., 7/01
-- thanks to Uli for the AM tape
-- the beginnings of Dew and China Cat were lost in the broadcast
-- the end of Hard To Handle suffers from very bad AM reception
-- the first verse of Rider (and possibly other verses) was edited out for broadcast purposes.
-- this is the only known source for these songs
Deadbase also has Truckin' and Long Black Limousine in their list for this show. those 2 songs don't appear on any circulating tapes. Their source for their listing is likely a newspaper article which mentioned these songs.
Seeing this brings me back to those days. I saw the band ten times with the 1971 five member formation. I was 17 in 71. What an amazing time to have grown up. And as fate, good fortune and luck of the draw I was completely enveloped in the music at an early age. The Dead were not so popular in the early 70s. The 71 France "private party" must have been a hoot, but the general feeling at Dead shows in those days was truly intimate.

Sir is there something wrong with you're ears and eyes if you would do some research on this show you would see that the setlist matches up with what THE ENTIRE PLANETS SETLIST OF THIS SHOW, every song is matched up with set list archived online.

This sure doesn't match the listing at deadlists NOR the other page for this date.
You can see a video of this show including the Jerry interview, Hard To Handle and Rider (in color), Morning Dew, Sing Me Back Home in black and white and much french TV commentating at http://gratefulvideo.com/. Hard To Handle smokes, Pig and Jerry are great but the real star is Bill K. What a drummer! BTW that is Pig playing the electric piano as no organ was present, dunno why. The other source transferred by Charlie Miller is better as it's a soundboard without patches and sounds terrific.

Pigpen in France...a "Must Have"...
Monophonic for the first 6 tracks, stereo thereafter. Quality stereo soundboard recording from track 7 to track 18.
From "Playing in the Band" to "Johnny B. Goode" the sound is in stereo. Nice mix and tasty electric piano licks, I bet that was Pigpen, there is no one playing piano while he blows his harp on BBM.
Tracks 7-18 are Well worth the download and are highly recommended. The rest is optional, and I do mean OPTIONAL.
Sounds like THE GRATEFUL DEAD were having lots of fun this night. Thanks for the Love from France.
PS: Watch Pigpen perform "Hard to Handle" from this show at:

the dead playing around a pool circled with candles at a 450 year old chateau during the summer solstice. sounds great!

There was a little problem with the source, a patch at the beginning but it doesn't hamper this show!!! It's hot, hot, hot!!! 5 stars for the tunes and attitude, 4.7 for the patch because I can live with it!
Merveilleux show que nous avons pu voir à la télévision ( POP2), ce qui a l'époque était complétement inoui !
Voir Jerry Garcia à la télé.. it was a dream !
Qualité médiocre du son mais que de souvenirs !

not exceptional, but very good
The best part of this offering, is the extra tracks added before Playin' using an AM tape. The sound isn't great for the patched songs, but lets those of us who had this gem on tape hear the rest of the show. One of my favorite Black Peter's. Be aware of the long silence in between most songs. Remember paitence is a virtue.
